Water hammer occurs when water flowing through a pipeline is stopped abruptly, generating an intense pressure surge that seeks relief throughout the system; including the piping, fixtures, water heater, etc. When left unchecked, disturbing noise and certain mechanical damage to the plumbing system will occur, including; premature failure of water heaters, faucets, seals, joints, and pipes.  Sizing Arresters The volume of compressed gas available within the system at flow pressure is the main factor that determines shock absorbing capacity. Since the shock producing energy (kinetic energy) in any given piping system can be calculated, the volume of compressed gas needed to absorb the energy and bring the moving column of water to a more gradual stop can also be calculated . Although some arresters have different thread size connections, simply matching pipe size with arrester connection is not a recommended method for specifying arresters. A proper sizing method recognizes the volume of gas required to safely absorb the energy and all the factors that contribute to the total shock energy within a given system. The different sizes and types of connections are only intended for the convenience of the installer. Controlling Water Hammer The most effective means of controlling water hammer is a measured, compressible cushion of gas within the piping system. Engineered water hammer arresters employ a permanently sealed, specified quantity of gas to absorb water hammer. When water stops abruptly, the Rester’s cushion of air reacts instantaneously, thus absorbing pressure spikes that cause water hammer.
